This weekend the girls split the weekend by winning on Saturday against the St. Paul, Lakers and then loosing on Sunday, by just a handful of points, to the Star of the Sea, Sailors. Saturday, Rebecca Alway was on fire in the first game by serving eight successful serves against the Lakers with Katie Boyle's help with a few of her own strong serves. Unfortunately, we ended up losing 21 to 25 for a final score. The second game, Kaitlyn Snyder and Brooklyn Misko served us to a victory with a score of 25 to 18. The final match score was 15 to 6, bringing us to victory that gave us a spot in the districts. Sunday, was a heart breaker for the girls. Alex Dozek came out strong with seven fabulous serves that made us think we had it in the bag. The Sailors ended up winning 25 to 21. The second game we won 25 to 22 with hopes of finally beating the Sailors. The third and final match, however, was lost by a score of 15 to 10.

On the evening of Friday the 14th we came up against the St. Paul Lakers. This is when we officially became the"come back team" . We lost the first game by a tight score of 23 to 25. We came back to win the next game with a score of 25 to 23. In the final match, we won with an equally heart stopping score of 15 to 13. It wasn't for the faint of hearts
On Saturday, the games were a carbon copy of Friday's games, only against St. Isaac Jogues Charges. The come back team, again "came back". We started with a loss, a score of 24 to 26. We came back and won 25 to 23 in the second game, and a final match victory 15 to 13. We are looking forward to next week to see how the girls can possibly top the excitement they have given their fans. Go Chargers!!!

SJA Varsity Football Faces St. Isaac Jogues
Post October 11, 2011
On Saturday, October 1st, the SJA Varsity football faces local rival St. Isaac Jogues at Charger field, a re-match from two weeks earlier in the season that ended with a one point loss to the SJA Chargers. The close score of the first game was a true indicator of how evenly matched these two teams are. This second competition was also a tight game, and unfortunately went down in the scorebook as 12 to 18 loss for the SJA Chargers.
The game started on a promising note. Josh Wilk didn’t let the soft and muddy field slow him down as he made a touchdown, putting SJA up 6 – 0 in the first quarter. The St. Isaac offense answered back with a touchdown of their own, tying the score at 6 – 6. Dan Brady completed several runs, advancing the ball down the field for SJA before the quarter ended.
In the second quarter, SJA offense struggled to make positive yardage with their running game, then took to the air. An incomplete pass attempt and a foiled punt attempt turned the ball over on downs to SIJ. The St. Joan defense turned on the burners, with Ben Kloka and Landon Counsman using their tackling skills. St. Isaac’s offense kept chipping away until they crossed the goal line, bringing the score to SJA 6, SIJ 12.
In the third quarter, John Fisher made some key carrying plays, adding to offensive gains by Wilk and Brady. Wilk continued his strong play, muscling his way across the goal line once more, bringing the score to a tied 12 – 12. During the SIJ possession, Josh Duffy and Kevin Jones made their defensive skills count, tackling in the backfield.
As the fourth quarter began, St. Isaac’s offense broke free with a 30 yard touchdown run, bringing the score to SJA 12 – SIJ 18. While St. Joan battled back, they were unable to put any additional numbers on the board before the clock ran out. It was a disappointing second loss of the season for the St. Joan Varsity team, but the tight scores of both games revealed how well they played.
JV Gridiron Heroes Protect Home Turf, 24-13
Post October 4, 2001
The JV football squad completed a two-game sweep of their crosstown rival, St. Isaac Jogues last Saturday, beating SIJ 24-13. The Chargers got out of the gate quickly, as Brendan Bergeron scored on St. Joan’s first possession with a 45-yard touchdown run. Anthony Oliver’s 15-yard scamper for six followed, and Chargers capitalized on a Brendan Krotche defensive fumble recovery with another of Joey Schaffer patented 40-yard runs off the right end for an 18-0 1st quarter lead.
With the large lead came the opportunity to get quality playing time for many of the reserves. Nick Blum & Jonathan Martin led the offense, with Ryan Duffy, CJ Carion & Zach Moore making play after play on the defensive side. However, SIJ was able to squeeze out two touchdowns and shrink their deficit to 18-13 by halftime.
In the opening drive of the third quarter, though, General Talerico set loose his ground attack behind the offensive line of Paul Ireson, Daniel Chandler, John LeFever, Aiden Lahey, Robert Cornwell and Anthony Kopke. After controlling the ball on a 7-minute drive, Anthony Oliver’s short run to pay dirt extended the Charger lead to 24-13.
Once the lead was extended, the Chargers turned the game over to its defense. Led by Kyle Jones, Nik David, Zac Melendez, Jimmy Rauh and Evan Zschering, the SIJ offense was shut down to secure the victory. With the win, the Chargers extended their record to 4-2 for the season.
The JV team travels to Bishop Foley High School on Saturday at 5:30pm to take on Royal Oak Shrine.

9/24 and 9/25
After a tough loss to Star, the Chargers were ready for their re-match against St. Clare. St. Joan of Arc came out strong and took the 1st game 25-20. In game #2 the Chargers were trailing 22-14. Thanks to Jessica Clouse and her consistent serving of 11 strait points, the Chargers took game #2, 25-22! SJA also claimed game #3 with a score of 15-10. Keep up the good work ladies!
10/1
The Chargers took on the Mountaineers of St. Mary. Adjusting well to playing in a much smaller gym the Chargers took game one 25-22. SJA could not get past the Mountaineers in game #2, 25-19. Taking charge of game #3 the Chargers were victorious, with a score of 15-12!
10/2
St. Joan traveled to take on the Lakers of St. Paul. The Chargers took control of game #1, with a score of 25-12. Great job to Stefanie Coffman with 12 straight service points! SJA did not let up in game #2 and defeated the Lakers with a score of 25-14. Great job to the entire team!!

This weekend the JV1 Charges split the weekend with a win on Saturday and loss on Sunday, just like the Tigers. Anna Ellis had 8 powerful serves in the first game on Saturday that helped bring us to a victory 25/10 over the St Mary's Mountaineers. The second game serving victory was split between Anna again and Chiara Nicholas with a 25/17 win. The final game in this series was a 9/15 loss. Becka Alway was on point with her defense all weekend. Sunday told a very different story, however. The series against the St. Paul Laker, that we played at St. Isaac Joes was a tough defeat. The first game was a 25/16 win due partly to seven strong serves by Amber Braker. The second game was a tight loss of 21/25. The final game was an 15/8 loss completing this series.
JV Boys Soccer
Post September 27, 2011
The JV Boys soccer team continued non-conference play on Monday against cross-town rivals,St. Getrude. SJA got out ahead early when Pat Thomson scored on a penalty kick. The scoring for SJA continued with more goals from Pat Thompson and Pat Reardon. Great defensive plays came from Roman Brancato and Stavros Hedglin. SJA's first win was anchored by her goalies Liam Smith and Dan McMann.
SJA opened season play last Sunday against Our Lady Star of the Sea. The Chargers were hoping to carry over their preseason win last week but Star of the Sea had other plans. Christian Spearman, David Lewis and Henry Hass lead the attack for SJA but the Star defense repeatedly shut them down. Drew Notoriano held the SJA defense firm but the Star attack was too much. The Chargers lost their season opener to Star of the Sea 5-0. The boys hope to turn their season around with games this weekend against St. Anne and St. Mary Mt. Clemens.
This weekend the JV1 Chargers were busy with pancake breakfast, pictures and lots and lots of volleyball. Saturday we weren't successful against Our Lady Star of the Sea Sailors, however. We were able to win the first game with great serving from Amber Braker, Peyton Gretkierewicz and Rebecca Alway. Also, great defense by these grils and Alex Dozek and Emma Fetterman brought us to a 25/13 win. We didn't end up on top in both the second or third games to finish out this series. The girls tried to fight their way with a tough defense by Kaitlyn Snyder, and good serving attempts by Chiara Nicholas. The next day told a very different story, however, as we beat the Falcons of St. Clair. The first game was fun to watch as Anna Ellis, Alex Dozek and Rebecca Alway had several points between them with great defense by these girls and Emma Fetterman. The second game ended in a loss, however, great plays by the newer team players gave them a good fight especially Lucy Barnowske, Erin Kane and Alexa Bruteltell. We again came back to win the third and final game with Chiara Nicholas serving the final 6 in a row and Alex Dozek with 6 points in the beginning.
SJA Varsity Football Improves Record to 3 and 1
Post September 27, 2011
On Sunday, September 25, the SJA Varsity football team took on Our Lady of the Lakes at Charger field. The first quarter was dominated by the Lakers, who completed three consecutive first down advances. Defenders Dan Brady, Josh Wilk, Tim Meyers and Matt Bergeron worked to keep the damage to a minimum, the quarter ending with a 0 to 0 score.
In the second quarter the Charger offense finally got hold of the ball, due to a key sack by Landan Counsman in the Laker’s backfield. Wilk made an impressive 23 yard run, which was called back due to a flag on the play. A pass intended for Josh Duffy was intercepted, as the Lakers took possession. The game halted for a short while after Kevin Jones took a hard, high shoulder hit and needed assistance. As play resumed, the Charger Defense kept their game faces on. Tristin Richardson made a great tackle, and John Fisher interrupted a Laker pass play near the end zone. The Lakers took to the air again, this time successfully completing a touchdown pass and a good extra point kick. The Chargers wanted numbers on the board. Matt Bergeron received the kick off, and ran the ball back to the 50 yard line. QB Wilk worked the ball down the field. With 12 seconds left on the clock, Richardson completed a pass and took it in to the end zone. Brady’s kick was good, and the half ended in an 8 – 8 tie.
In the third quarter, the Chargers warmed up their running game. Fisher was instrumental in breaking tackles and advancing the ball down the field. Brady took the ball and scampered down the field for a 46 yard touchdown run. The extra point kick was no good, bringing the score to Chargers 14, Lakers 8. The Lakers wanted revenge, but the defense of Ryan Race and Anthony Meagher stopped them. Duffy, Bergeron, Ben Kloka and Will McNelis were also key Charger defenders in the quarter.
As the fourth quarter began, Richardson carried the ball down the field for a touchdown run. Brady’s kick added the two extra points, as the scoreboard showed Chargers 22, Lakers 8. The Lakers displayed signs of fatigue, and their meager bench staff left them few options. The Chargers brought in fresh legs from the bench with Jack Kloka in the QB position. As the ball turned over to the Lakers, Charger defenders Michael Vogt, Ben Sosnowski, Tim Johnson and John Kennedy worked to hold the line. The clock ran out, with a Charger victory.

On this historic, memorable day, a little red spark was ignited, and the St. Joan Chargers JV #1 swept all three games against the St. Mary Montaineers. The first games was lead to a 25/9 victory, partly due to the series of 10 consistant serves by Kaitlyn Snyder. Lucy Barnowske had several great returns in this game as well. Chiara Nicholas and Peyton Gretkierewicz also had several back to back serves that completed the win. The second game ended 25/19 with good serving by Alexa Bruttell and Anna Ellis. St Joan 2 St Lawrence 1
St Joan started off with tough competition and was a pitchers dual. The teams both played very tough for the first game of the season. Joe Cozzolino took the mound and struck out 15 batters and only allowing 2 hits. Jacob Sock had double and scored the game winning run. <
