NEW CYO SPRING SPORTS ELIGIBILITY Rules
SPRING SPORTS REGISTATION DEADLINE THURS. JAN. 21ST!! Baseball, Softball & Track
- Reminder that CYO not longer allows baseball & Softball participants to play games, scrimmages or tournaments with same sport summer teams while participating with CYO teams.Athletes may practice with summer teams only!!
- Baseball & Softball Season ends April 30th & Varsity Playoffs system completed by May 10/11
In the attached letters from CYO Executive Director Suzanne Heath she explains a major change to CATHOLIC YOUTH ORGANIZATION (CYO) participation rules regarding spring sports, which take effect this SPRING 2016! Basically the CYO has decided to use a consistent eligibility participation rule for all sports of each sports season which now aligns the CYO with the eligibility rules used by the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) --- Athletes ARE NOT ALLOWED to participate in athletic contests of the same sport while competing for CYO in the same sport season!! The letters speak for them self but obviously this has caused much frustration and many coaches, athletic directors & parents have let the CYO know their feelings about this rules change & especially how it was implemented with little or no input from those of us who are on the front lines of all eligibility issues and enforcement of CYO rules and policies within our parishes. While we had hoped CYO would reconsider since the November announcement they have made the Executive Board decision not to revert back to a rule many of us have worked hard to make-work for nearly two decades. Although I understand the complexities and issues involved in their decision I strongly believe this will hurt the short and long term numbers and quality of our CYO spring sports programs. On the positive side the CYO has at least agreed to shorten the CYO season to make the commitment away from summer team games more reasonable. I have included the the CYO Spring sports 2016 general schedule. SJA will take Holy Thursday thru Monday March 28
but we will need to be back practicing Tues. March 29
& will do all we can to avoid playing games until after Easter Break if possible.
How does this effect my child’s participation at SJA?
CYO/SJA Spring athletes will be allowed to practice with their recreation, city, neighborhood club, Fed or travel SUMMER teams BUT CANNOT play in a game/contest, tournament or scrimmage once they have played a CYO game in the same sport until our CYO/SJA season is complete and we have played our last game including varsity CYO Playoffs.
What would be the penalty/consequence if a CYO athlete is caught playing both CYO & with other summer teams in the same sport season?
Violating athlete would no longer be eligible to play or participate in CYO sport, game or event again through 8
Grade & the team/parish which the athlete participated would forfeit all games & titles they may have won while the illegal player was participating.
How long will the CYO Season last?
CYO/SJA league season will begin the weekend of March 18
– Wed. March 23
and end May 1
. CYO baseball & softball Varsity Playoffs will take place May 7
with Districts and semi-finals & the CYO baseball/softball finals will take place May 11/12
(I will contact CYO if we have a team make finals due to our 8
Gr. Wash. Trip to modify date). CYO will also setup a chance for all baseball/softball playoff qualifiers to play at Comerica Park on May 26. SJA will begin baseball/softball placements on March 7
Why should my child delay their summer sports season to play for SJA & CYO?
My opinion the CYO and SJA provide a short compact season which helps your child play for their parish or school team which also helps reinforce our Christian values and sense of community we all work so hard to instill in our young student athletes. Although the “summer teams” provide excellent opportunity to learn and play baseball & Softball the Christian Parish/School experience our children receive from CYO sports is valued and important especially since they get to participate with other athletes who share their faith and moral values. SJA Athletics have and will continue to provide exceptional coaching, team bonding & faith formation while learning and playing the sports our kids love with their fellow parishioners or classmates.
We are still on board with CYO/SJA Spring sports what should we do next?
If you son or daughter play softball or baseball with a summer team or program I would find out when they start practices and games this spring. Then check with your child’s summer coach and see if it would be all right to just practice with the team when there are no conflicts with SJA schedule and delay playing games, tournaments or scrimmages until the CYO season is complete. Once you have done that go stjoan.net (Athletics) beginning
